The DC Extended Universe has had a dark and troubled path to the big screen, rather like its brooding central characters.
Fans have been divided over Zack Snyder's often bleak and doom-laden vision of the iconic superheroes and box office returns have been solid but not quite as extraordinary as those for main rivals Marvel.
The recent staggering success of Wonder Woman (now the most successful DC movie ever at the US box office) had already highlighted how a lighter touch seems to engage with audiences. Diana Prince's role has been notably central in the Justice League promo materials amid rumors that Warner Bros was trying to change the long-term vision for the franchise.
The latest Justice League movie leaks seem to indicate that things were even worse than fans realised.

One of the recent posters proclaims "Unite the League."
With the recent withdrawal of Snyder following a personal tragedy, Joss Whedon has been brought in to usher the blockbuster to the big screen this autumn.
Rather than unite, it seems the Buffy and Avengers director has been tasked with saving and rebooting the entire movie and the cinematic future of the DC Universe.
Batman-on-Film write Bill Remy quoted a source from the set who revealed just how desperate the situation is.
Justice League movie first cut was 'unwatchable' .
He said: "The Justice League reshoots and the resulting changes being made to the film are significant. These reshoots – which are still taking place – are not standard pick-ups or additional photography.
"Why? Apparently, an early cut of the film was deemed 'unwatchable.' Thus, substantial changes to the film were ordered."
As well as the ubiquitous rumours, reports and leaks, there have also been comments from the actual actors involved in Justice League.

In a new interview with IGN, actor Joe Morton – who plays Dr. Silas Stone (the father of Cyborg, aka Victor Stone) in Justice League – explained more.
Morton said of the current reshoots: “Well, the stuff that I had to do were just really small little bits and pieces, nothing necessarily having to do with tone. I know that with Ray [Fisher], the young man who plays Victor, there were some adjustments that they made in terms of the tone of that character.
“I think what I heard was that there was a need from the studio to lighten up the film in a way, that the film felt too dark.”
