The glamorous 58-year-old, late magician Paul Daniels’s assistant and wife, has surprised millions by taking this year’s show by storm with a string of dazzling performances.
It means that despite being the oldest contestant in the competition she is among the favourites to win alongside her partner, Italian hunk Giovanni Pernice.
But more importantly, her talent on the dance floor is proving there is more to the “lovely Debbie McGee” than just a woman who stood on stage in a leotard helping her husband perform illusions.
She said: “I was a magician’s assistant, a pretty young thing, and then I got older.

"Some people probably thought I was just this fluffy blonde who stood at the back during his magic shows and was not capable of achieving anything, a ditzy blonde I suppose.
But there is a lot more to me.
"If anyone knew what I was capable of it was Paul, but working with him I didn’t always show it.
"I have moments on Strictly where I could easily cry because if he was alive he would see exactly what he knew I could achieve.”
Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee got married in 1988
Paul, who died of a brain tumour aged 77 in 2016, first met Debbie in 1979 during rehearsals for his summer season in Great Yarmouth.
He was 40 and she was 20.
Speaking about her he said: “She had personality and life and presence.
"We dated a little, but she was far too young.

"I said, ‘Those nasty people called journalists will shred you, call you a gold-digger.
"Find someone your own age’.”
The couple married in 1988 and he later joked: “People say ‘You’re right lucky to have Debbie McGee’ and I say ‘you don’t know how many I’ve auditioned…’.”
Debbie credits Strictly for putting the sparkle back in her life as she continues to come to terms with losing her beloved husband.

"Giovanni makes me laugh every day and that’s filling a big gap for me."
Paul took part in Strictly in 2010, partnering Ola Jordan, but they bombed and became the second couple to be eliminated.
This series, bookmakers make Debbie the 7/2 third favourite to win with former head judge Len Goodman even saying he fancied her to go on and lift the glitter ball and become the oldest winner ever.
Debbie said: “I am enjoying it so much because it’s brought back my joie de vivre.
"Since Paul died I have not been someone to sit around and feel sad every day because that’s not how we were.
